According to Eat This, salad dressing is a processed food with ingredients added for flavor and texture. These usually include sweeteners, spices, oils, food dyes, and preservatives.

Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard Medical School wrote that bottled salad dressings are often rich sources of saturated fat, calories, sodium, and added sugar. For example, a serving of Olive Garden Signature Italian dressing has 520 milligrams of sugar and people often use more than the standard serving size of two tablespoons.
