Certain feminine hygiene products are surprising household items that can become dangerous if used past the expiration date. Dr. Alyssa Dweck, an OB-GYN, stated that storage is key for feminine care products such as tampons.

She said cotton, for instance, is ” susceptible to mold and bacteria,” so it’s not something ideal for a hygiene product. Itching and irritation can be caused bu moldy products, so it’s best to store them in a dry and cool place. According to Dweck, tampons have a shelf life of about five years.
