If Unopened Cereal Lasts Six To Eight Months

According to FoodSafety.gov, your cereal will last for six to twelve months on the shelf, if you keep your cereal box unopened. But you can keep it for two to three months after you open it. Breakfast cereals don’t go bad in the same way that fresh foods do.

“There is not that much of a quality issue,” Emily Broad Leib, director of Harvard Food Law & Policy Clinic, told TIME. “If you leave your cereal box open, it can get stale, but you are not going to get sick from it.”
