According to Happy Herbivore, “Anything that isn’t a whole food is technically processed.” Applesauce is processed because it’s not just a whole apple. It’s mixed with other ingredients including sugar or cinnamon.

Then, store-bought applesauce is packaged into containers to keep it preserved. In order to make sure you’re eating a healthy version of applesauce, look for factors such as the variety of apples used, how the apples were processed, the cooking temperature, and whether the peel was included.
